Someone left a £130,000 Apple 1 computer at a recycling centre
A mystery woman who donated a rare Apple 1 computer to a recycling firm is in for a windfall payment.
CleanBayArea is trying to trace the woman in her 60s who left the 1976 model with them in Silicon Valley after clearing out her garage when her husband died.
Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, designed and hand-built the computers for $666.66 and only a few are known to exist.
They sold the computer at auction for $200,000 (£173,000) but it has a policy to split the proceeds 50/50 with the person who donated it.
Victor Gichun, spokesman for the comapny, said: ‘The body was made out of wood. I’ve never seen anything like that. My first reaction was it was a fake. Then we started looking at it.’
Gichun declined to say who bought the Apple 1, only that it was a private collector. He’s not sure whether it is still operational.
He said he will recognize the woman, who he believes is local, when he sees her and will write her out a cheque for $100,000.
The boxes sat in the company’s warehouse on a pallet for a couple of weeks because they didn’t expect to find anything valuable, Gichun said.
