Actress Doyel accuses director Rashed Chowdhury of withholding payment for 2021 film ‘Chandrabati Kotha’

Actress Dilruba Hossain Doyel has recently spoken out against director N. Rashed Chowdhury, accusing him of withholding payments for her work in the 2021 film Chandrabati Kotha. In a televised interview, Doyel claimed that several members of the cast and crew, including the production team, art department, and costume designers, have not been compensated, despite the film being funded by a government grant in the fiscal year 2013-14 and taking nearly five years to complete.

Doyel expressed her frustration, saying, "It's been three years since the film's release, and we still haven't been paid. Meanwhile, the director has faced no such issues and has already secured another government grant for a new project."

When asked why she waited so long to speak up, Doyel explained that she felt she had no proper platform to voice her concerns, as she is not a member of the Actors Equity Bangladesh or any other industry organization. She criticized the lack of support for struggling artistes, questioning the role of the Actors Equity and the Film Artistes' Association, saying, "What have they done for struggling artistes? They hold prayer gatherings for deceased artistes, but what about those suffering in silence?"

Doyel also spoke about the challenges faced by artistes in the industry, citing her own experience with Bangladesh Television (BTV), where she was repeatedly offered lower positions despite her qualifications. "Does talent not matter?" she asked, raising concerns about the impact of syndicates and arbitrary practices on the careers of many artistes.

The actress's dissatisfaction reflects broader issues within the entertainment industry, and she called for reforms, especially regarding payment delays and the unequal treatment of artistes. Her comments have sparked discussions about the need for greater transparency and support for those working in the Bangladeshi film industry.
