Tunisian Actress Hend Sabri Resigns as UN Ambassador Over Gaza Crisis
Renowned Tunisian actress Hend Sabri has announced her resignation as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in protest of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Sabri, who has been involved in humanitarian work for 13 years, condemned the use of "famine and siege as weapons of war" against the 2.4 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.
Sabri stated that she had tried to raise her concerns with the WFP leadership but was unsuccessful. She expressed her outrage over the situation in Gaza, where a severe humanitarian crisis has unfolded due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The actress emphasized that she could no longer continue in her role as a Goodwill Ambassador while the WFP remained silent on the issue.
The Gaza Strip has been the scene of intense conflict since October 7, when Hamas launched an attack on Israeli soil. In response, Israel has launched relentless bombing campaigns, resulting in the deaths of over 14,000 people, primarily civilians. The Israeli government has also imposed a "total siege" on the Gaza Strip, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis and the displacement of over 1.7 million Gaza residents.
The WFP expressed gratitude to Sabri for her humanitarian work and praised her "quick response to emergency situations." However, the organization did not address Sabri's concerns about the Gaza crisis.
