Japan considers taking precautions against mpox
In response to the World Health Organization's recent declaration of a public health emergency due to mpox outbreaks in Africa, Japanese government officials are considering precautionary measures to address the situation.
On Friday, senior officials from relevant government agencies met to discuss strategies for gathering and sharing information about mpox, as well as preparing the medical care system to handle potential cases.
The officials agreed to collect data on mpox infection rates in countries where outbreaks have been confirmed and to increase awareness among travelers entering and leaving Japan about the disease. They also reviewed the inspection and medical protocols established during the 2022 global mpox outbreak to ensure they remain effective.
Additionally, the Foreign Ministry has issued a Level 1 infectious disease alert for seven African countries, advising travelers to take precautions against mpox. Health Minister Keizo Takemi announced that Japan is preparing to supply vaccines and other medical products to Congo in response to a request from the Congolese government, highlighting Japan's commitment to supporting global public health efforts.
