Father's day

Father's Day or Father's festival is a celebration civil spread throughout the world. In many countries, the anniversary is scheduled for the third Sunday in June, while in Italy is celebrated on March 19th.

Father's Day, as we know it today, was born in the early decades of the twentieth century to complement Mother's Day to celebrate fatherhood and fathers in general. The feast is celebrated on various dates throughout the world, is often accompanied by the delivery of a gift to his father.

The first documented when it was celebrated would seem to be July 5, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia, at the local Methodist church. [1] It was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd the first to urge the formalization of the party; without being aware of the celebrations of Fairmont, inspired by the sermon heard in church on Mother's Day 1909, she organized the festival for the first time June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. The party was organized in the month of June because that month marked the birthday of the father of Mrs. Dodd, a veteran of the American Civil War.

The date generally varies from country to country. In countries that follow the American tradition, the festival is held on the third Sunday of June. In many countries of the Catholic tradition, Father's Day is celebrated on the day of St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, March 19.

In some countries, the festival is associated with fathers in their national role, as in Russia, where it is celebrated as the feast of the defenders of the homeland (День защитника Отечества), and in Thailand, where it coincides with the birthday of the King Rama IX, revered as the father of the nation.

As in many countries of the Catholic tradition, Father's Day is celebrated on the day of St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a symbol of humility and dedication. In the Roman Martyrology, March 19, n. 1: "Solemnity of St. Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary: right man, who was descended from David, made his father to the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who wanted to be called the son of Joseph and be his submissive like a son to his father. The Church with special honor venerates him as patron, placed by the Lord in the custody of her family. »
