Violent Deaths Decrease by 3.4% in Brazil, but Rise in 6 States
Brazil saw a significant reduction in violent deaths last year, with a 3.4% decrease compared to 2022, and an even more notable 27.7% decrease since 2017, which was a record year for such incidents. According to the 18th Brazilian Public Security Yearbook, the country recorded 46,328 intentional violent deaths in 2023.
The overall reduction in violent deaths, which includes intentional homicides, robberies resulting in death, bodily injuries followed by death, and deaths caused by police intervention, is a positive trend. This downward trajectory began in 2017, a year that witnessed 64,079 victims of violent deaths. The sharpest declines were observed in the last two years, with a marked reduction of 0.7% between 2022 and 2023.
State Increase Analysis
Despite the national decrease, six states experienced increases in violent deaths in 2023:
- Amapá: Up by 39.8%
- Mato Grosso: Up by 8.1%
- Pernambuco: Up by 6.2%
- Mato Grosso do Sul: Up by 6.2%
- Minas Gerais: Up by 3.7%
- Alagoas: Up by 1.4%
When comparing the 2023 figures to those from 2017, there were 17,751 fewer violent deaths. This reduction surpasses the populations of 3,661 municipalities in Brazil and is roughly equivalent to the combined population of the country's 15 least populous cities.
The decrease in violent deaths can be seen as a significant achievement for public security policies and law enforcement efforts in Brazil. However, the rise in specific states highlights the need for targeted interventions and more localized strategies to address and mitigate violence.
The overall decline since 2017 is a step towards improved safety and security, but the increases in certain regions underscore that there is still work to be done. Monitoring trends and implementing effective measures in the states with rising numbers will be crucial in continuing the national downward trend in violent deaths.
