Opposition says government 'turned its face' to increasing difficulties for families
These positions were expressed in the course of an interpellation by the PCP to the Government, in the plenary of the Assembly of the Republic, on the increase in the cost of living for the Portuguese, as a result of inflation and the international situation.
During the debate, communist deputy Bruno Dias pointed to the Minister of Economy and the Sea, António Costa Silva, and drew a parallel between a house on fire and measures to mitigate the rise in fuel prices.
“If a house is on fire, and you appear with a fire extinguisher in your hands, and pour the extinguisher through a window, you certainly understand that in the other rooms the fire will continue to go out of control. And even where you used the fire extinguisher, a lot can still burn”, maintained the deputy.
He continued: “Then you can say: 'this extinguisher cost a lot of money, I made a great effort to help you, and you don't even want to know what this house would be like if it wasn't for me'. The problem is that the house continued to burn, and we had already warned that more had to be done to put out the fire”.
The blockist José Soeiro protested against support for the food basket worth 60 euros per family, which “does not compensate for the effect of inflation” and also does not cover the set of workers who need it.
“What the Government has to offer is humiliation”, stressed the BE deputy, accusing the Government of practicing a “policy of complacency” with the increase in inequalities.
On the right, social-democratic deputy Nuno Carvalho said he did not know in which country António Costa's ministers live and resorted to irony to talk about what the party says is the executive's inability to bring the country to a successful conclusion.
“Ministers, tell me, you don't know what to do with the absolute majority, do you? They look like a kid in a sports car. It’s all very beautiful, but they don’t come with their feet on the pedals,” she commented.
The parliamentary leader of Chega, Pedro Pinto, reacted to the PCP's interventions throughout the debate, saying that the speech could have been made by communist historical figures, such as Álvaro Cunhal, Octávio Pato or Carlos Brito. Read More…
