OAS Mission Arrives in Guatemala to Observe Magistrate Elections
Today August 5, an Observation Mission from the Organization of American States (OAS) arrived in Guatemala to oversee the election of Magistrates for the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) and the Court of Appeals (CA). This initiative was confirmed by President Bernardo Arévalo during a press conference on August 1.
The OAS mission started its activities on August 5. The delegation has been monitoring the court election process through various channels since their initial arrival in Guatemala on June 24, following a request by President Arévalo to the Permanent Council of the OAS.
The mission plans to meet with national authorities and other relevant groups to ensure a thorough observation of the election process.
Current Challenges in the Election Process
The Nomination Committee responsible for selecting SCJ judge candidates has repeatedly suspended sessions due to a lack of consensus on the approval of the meeting venue. The latest session was set for August 6 at 9 a.m.
Some commissioners from both the SCJ and CA Nomination Committees have expressed concerns that these delays are intentional, aiming to extend the tenure of current judges, a situation that has occurred in the past.
The presence of the OAS mission underscores the international community's interest in ensuring a transparent and fair judicial election process in Guatemala. The mission's findings and observations will likely play a crucial role in validating the election's integrity and addressing any concerns regarding the process.
