Movistar and Tigo explore infrastructure sharing in Colombia
Colombian mobile carriers Movistar and Tigo have recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to embark on a collaborative effort by establishing a jointly-owned infrastructure company, aiming to facilitate network sharing between the two companies. Despite maintaining their competition in the consumer and wholesale telecom services sectors, the operators will explore mutually advantageous methods of sharing their access networks while retaining complete independence over their individual business strategies.
According to a report from CommsUpdate, should the operators successfully agree on network sharing, it is projected that approximately 10% of Colombia's territory would experience enhanced coverage, with improved quality spanning over 700 municipalities. Furthermore, this infrastructure joint venture would also serve as a specialized entity for future 5G deployments.
