Cameroonian student, artist among NWP students exhibition
The Grande Prairie Art Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition titled "Material Memories," which showcases the remarkable talent of independent students from Northwestern Polytechnic. Among the featured students is Aurel Tchoumo Tsafack, a native of Cameroon who arrived in Grande Prairie as an international student in 2018. At the tender age of eight, Tsafack discovered his passion for drawing and painting, inspired by his family's artistic background.
Despite his parents' inability to showcase their own artistic skills to the world, Tsafack found encouragement and motivation from them. He acknowledges that his father, in particular, serves as his role model. Tsafack aspires to become the artist his father dreamed of being but never had the opportunity to pursue. During that time, avenues for artists to express themselves were scarce, making his father's advice all the more meaningful.
Tsafack's art predominantly revolves around African culture, which he deeply admires. By creating artwork that encompasses African themes and imagery, he considers himself an ambassador of the continent. His primary objective is to assert his identity and promote African culture on a global scale through his artistic expressions.
For Tsafack, art serves as both an escape and a therapeutic outlet. Engaging in artistic endeavors allows him to find solace and inner peace, serving as a form of therapy in his life.
Additionally, the Material Memories exhibition features other talented student artists including Marcia Tofer, Matthew Stewart, Natesa Medlicott-Kappo, and Connie Potter. This captivating display of artistic prowess will be accessible for viewing until August 6th.
