AFZ helicopter crashes on takeoff from Masvingo Airport
A helicopter belonging to the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) crashed shortly after takeoff from Masvingo Airport on a significant day for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was celebrating his 82nd birthday and the launch of Munhumutapa Day at the Great Zimbabwe monuments.
The helicopter, en route to Harare, crashed after departing, but fortunately, there were no fatalities. One crew member sustained minor injuries.
Contrary to initial concerns, President Mnangagwa was not on board the helicopter, as he had already left for Bikita by road to visit his late father’s grave.
The helicopter was supposed to collect him later for his return to Harare. Vice-Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi were also not aboard the ill-fated flight.
Nick Mangwana, Zimbabwe's Permanent Secretary of the Information Ministry, confirmed the incident on social media, assuring the public that there were no casualties. He stated that aviation authorities are investigating the crash, with more information to be shared once available.
The incident occurred at Masvingo Airport, which typically serves small chartered and military aircraft. This is the latest in a series of aviation accidents that Zimbabwe has experienced in recent years.
