Telecoms for Everyone: Highlighting the Benefits of Digital Connectivity for Dublin
A new campaign has been launched in Dublin with the aim of empowering residents by providing clear, factual information about the benefits and safety of telecoms infrastructure that supports digital connectivity in their local areas. This initiative is spearheaded by the four local authorities of Dublin—Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, and South Dublin County Council—in partnership with the CONNECT Research Ireland Centre for Future Networks and Communications and Smart Dublin.
As part of Dublin’s commitment to becoming a more connected and innovative city, the campaign features a series of fact-based videos that illustrate how telecoms infrastructure contributes to economic growth, community well-being, and the city’s evolution in the digital age. The collaboration among the local authorities aims to bring together industry leaders, academia, and key research centers like the CONNECT Centre at Trinity College to support the responsible rollout of future connectivity initiatives.
Dublin is on a path to evolve into a smart city, and world-class digital infrastructure is essential for enhancing community well-being and ensuring economic resilience. Just as the arrival of electricity transformed the city in the early 1900s, the local authorities are playing a crucial role in advancing Dublin’s telecoms and broadband networks to propel the city forward in the 21st century.
In our daily lives, we rely heavily on the internet for work, leisure, and managing various aspects of our routines. The connectivity that enables these activities has steadily improved over the years in two significant ways:
i. Mobile Connectivity: We have now entered the fifth generation of mobile telecoms, known as 5G. This technology, supported by mobile towers and masts throughout the city, allows us to use our mobile devices for calls, online activities, and much more.
ii. Fixed-Line Connectivity: Landline telephones have been a staple of city life for over half a century. The introduction of fibre-to-the-home broadband aims to provide every household in Dublin with access to fast, reliable fibre broadband.
In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, 5G connectivity is enabling innovations such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data to become integral to everyday life. These advancements are enhancing various sectors, from optimizing transportation to improving healthcare and public safety, all made possible through the fast and reliable connectivity provided by 5G.
The benefits of this new technology are numerous:
i. Faster Speeds: With lower latency and higher throughput, users can enjoy quicker data transmission.
ii. Improved Efficiency and Reliability: Enhanced network management ensures dependable connectivity across various applications.
iii. Increased Capacity: 5G supports a significant increase in the number of connections between devices and the internet, facilitating seamless communication.
While the local authorities do not operate telecoms equipment, they provide access to the streetscapes and built environment where appropriate to enhance connectivity across Dublin. Each local authority has a dedicated point of contact to support telecom initiatives and works diligently to ensure that all communities benefit from great connectivity that is deployed sensitively.
The landline, fibre, 4G, and 5G networks are operated by commercial telecom operators who collaborate with local authorities to ensure that everyone has access to the highest quality connectivity solutions available.
As Dublin continues to embrace the digital age, the "Telecoms for Everyone" campaign serves as a vital reminder of the importance of digital connectivity in fostering a thriving, innovative, and connected community.
