Shenmue III breaks Guinness World Record for crowdfunding

102 minutes is all it took for Shenmue III to raise $1million, with the game already well on the way to meeting all its stretch goals.

Not only has Shenmue III hit its minimum target for Kickstarter funding, but it’s done it so quickly it’s entered the record books.

The dream project, which has already raised $3.1m on the crowdfunding website – is now officially the fastest video game to raise $1m in crowdfunded pledges, smashing the six hours and five minute record set by isometric role-player Tides Of Numenera.

It’s also the second fastest of any Kickstarter project, behind only the Pebble Time smartwatch.

Kickstarter’s most funded video game in terms of overall pledges is Bloodstained: Ritual Of the Night, which recently reached $5.5 million. Technically space combat simulator Star Citizen only got $2.13 million from Kickstarter, although its total across all crowdfunding is a staggering $84 million.

Shenmue III - actually making the game won't be so quick

Shenmue III – actually making the game won’t be so quick

Shenmue III isn’t quite there yet but it’s already on $3.1 million, which means it’s almost guaranteed to reach $5 million and cover both its original and its newly set stretch goals.

But even $5 million is far less than is needed to make the entire game, and Sony has recently confirmed that they intend to help fund at least some of the rest – although when we spoke to him yesterday Sony’s Jim Ryan refused to be drawn on the details.

It’s transpired though that the Kickstarter campaign was actually Sega’s idea, although the original publisher of the first two games doesn’t appear to be helping out financially.
