Lynk Global and MEO Pioneering Direct-to-Device (D2D) Satellite Technology in Portugal
Lynk Global, Inc. (“Lynk”), a leading provider of satellite-direct-to-device (D2D) technology, has announced a significant milestone in its mission to enhance global connectivity. In partnership with MEO, Portugal's market-leading telecommunications operator, Lynk successfully demonstrated its patented D2D technology in Portugal, marking the first implementation of this innovative satellite technology by a national operator in the country.
The successful tests took place in a remote area of the Azores Islands, where MEO’s mobile frequencies were connected directly to Lynk’s satellites. This demonstration showcased the capability to perform emergency cellular broadcasts, messaging, and voice calls using unmodified mobile devices from various manufacturers. The event underscored the effectiveness of Lynk’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which function as “cell-towers-in-space,” ensuring service continuity and resilience, especially in crisis situations when traditional cell tower communications may be compromised or unavailable.
Daniel Dooley, Chief Commercial Officer of Lynk, expressed enthusiasm about the successful test, stating, “The latest successful test with MEO shows that Lynk’s patented technology works anywhere in the world, even in remote islands and maritime areas 1,000 miles off the coast of mainland Europe. As a major global D2D provider, we look forward to continuing our collaboration with MEO to enhance connectivity and expand coverage for all its customers.”
José Pedro Nascimento, Chief Technology Officer of MEO, highlighted the significance of this partnership, noting, “As the first national operator in Portugal to deploy Lynk’s innovative D2D satellite technology, MEO is once again pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in telecommunications. By implementing this cutting-edge technology, we are connecting rural, mountainous, and coastal regions that are typically underserved or completely out of reach of conventional mobile networks. This collaboration with Lynk positions us at the forefront of global connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted communication for all our customers, no matter where they are.”
Lynk’s D2D technology represents a transformative approach to telecommunications, particularly in areas where traditional mobile networks are limited or non-existent. With regulatory approvals in over 30 countries and ongoing deployments based on more than 50 commercial service contracts covering approximately 60 countries, Lynk is poised to revolutionize how people connect globally. Currently, Lynk provides cell broadcast (emergency) alerts and two-way SMS messaging, with plans to launch voice and mobile broadband services in the future.
The successful demonstration of Lynk’s D2D satellite technology in partnership with MEO marks a significant step forward in enhancing connectivity across Portugal, particularly in remote and underserved regions. As Lynk continues to expand its services and capabilities, the collaboration with MEO exemplifies the potential of satellite technology to bridge communication gaps and ensure that everyone, regardless of location, can stay connected. This pioneering effort not only reinforces Lynk’s position as a leader in satellite communications but also sets a precedent for future innovations in the telecommunications industry.
