Italian Ambassador Outlines G7’s Key Reform Areas for Ukraine

Carlo Formosa, the Italian Ambassador to Ukraine, has emphasized the G7 Ambassadors' focus on critical reforms, resilience, and the reconstruction of Ukraine as the country progresses towards European integration. In an interview with Ukrinform, he described the launch of Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations as a “historic milestone.”

Ambassador Formosa highlighted the collaborative efforts of the G7 Ambassadors’ Support Group, which works alongside Ukrainian authorities, international partners, and financial institutions to facilitate essential reforms. He stated, “We now need to stay the course, including by overcoming resistance to change while focusing on strengthening the rule of law, eradicating corruption, and reinforcing the transparency and effectiveness of the Ukrainian Administration.”

The G7 Ambassadors Support Group is committed to playing a significant role in this process, concentrating on critical reforms that will aid Ukraine’s European path, enhance resilience, and support reconstruction efforts. Formosa expressed optimism about contributing to Ukraine’s aspirations for a prosperous future.

The ambassador reaffirmed Italy's commitment to supporting Ukraine, particularly through the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, which will focus on aligning Ukraine with the EU’s acquis (the body of EU law). This conference is expected to play a crucial role in facilitating Ukraine's integration into the European Union.

On November 26, the G7 foreign ministers reiterated their support for Ukraine and condemned Russia’s “irresponsible and threatening nuclear rhetoric,” underscoring the international community's solidarity with Ukraine during these challenging times.

Starting January 1, 2024, the Italian Embassy will assume the chairmanship of the G7 Ambassadors’ Support Group for Ukraine, further solidifying Italy's leadership role in supporting Ukraine's reform and recovery efforts.

Ambassador Formosa's statements reflect a strong commitment from the G7 and Italy to assist Ukraine in its journey towards European integration, emphasizing the importance of reforms, resilience, and reconstruction in achieving a stable and prosperous future for the country.
