Either these robots are drunk, or just not as ‘high tech' as you might think
Guys, who gave these robots too many e-beers? Seriously, own up.
OK, so these robots are not actually drunk, they are just having minor trouble with their motor skills.
While they might look funny flailing around, these are actually some of the most advanced humanoid machines around – of course they’re not quite perfect yet.
Each robot is an entrant to the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals; a competition which offers a $2million (£1.3million) to the creators of any robot which can make it’s way through a series of obstacles including climbing steps, walking over uneven surfaces, and using door handles.
As the video shows, this is quite a tall over for even the most high-tech robots.
Falling over doesn’t immediately disqualify them from the competition, as the teams who created the robots are allowed to pull them back to their feet, however this incurs a 10-minute time penalty.
Despite the robots having no more soul than a toaster, spectators admit to becoming emotionally invested in the machines.
DARPA program manager Gill Pratt said: ‘I don’t cheer for my laptop. But people cheer for these [robots]. And of course when it falls, we all feel terrible, “Uh, it got hurt.”‘
