A devastating bug has hit iPhones causing them to crash when a single Indian character is sent to the device or even typed in text editor.

Devices running iOS 11 are affected and crash when any application receives the character in Telugu language.

Apps become unresponsive, including iMessage and apps like WhatsApp, Gmail and Facebook messenger, according to tech website The Verge .

However, other apps such as Telegram and Skype seem to be unaffected.

The bug also affected macOS versions of Safari and Messages, but Apple's public beta version of iOS 11.3 is unaffected, the Verge reported.

Apple said it is working on a fix for the iOS 11, the macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4 and tvOS 11 versions that the bug affects.

The company said older versions were not affected by the bug and added that Apple had already fixed the issue in the current beta versions of the operating systems.
