You're Probably Going To End Up Skipping E3 2023
The big three console manufacturers are skipping E3 this year, and the lack of first-party announcements could lead viewers to follow suit.
All three of the big console companies are skipping E3 2023, leaving not much of a reason to tune in. First beginning in 1997, the Electronic Entertainment Expo has been a major milestone event in gaming culture for many years. Publishers and developers would gather in front of a crowd at the Los Angeles Convention Center to unveil the latest upcoming titles, and there have even been celebrity guests and special performances to go with the exciting trailers and release date reveals.
However, the past few years haven’t been kind to E3, even before the COVID-19 pandemic led to the show being canceled outright in 2020 and presented as a virtual event only in 2021. As far back as 2016, major publishers like Sony and EA have started skipping E3 in favor of their own in-house livestream showcases - and as a result, the last few E3 events have been met with a lukewarm reception from viewers. Last year’s E3 2022 event was also canceled due to lingering health concerns surrounding COVID-19, leaving many to wonder if the once-prominent event is even necessary anymore in wake of Summer Game Fest and regular livestreams such as Nintendo Direct.
