X Faces Probe Over AI Data Privacy in Austria
Elon Musk's social media platform, X, is under investigation in Austria for potentially violating data privacy laws by using EU users' data to train AI without their consent.
The Austrian privacy group "None of Your Business" (NOYB), led by Max Schrems, filed the complaint, alleging that X unlawfully processed personal data between May 7, 2024, and August 1, 2024, without informing users or obtaining their consent, a clear breach of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), X's primary EU regulator, has also taken legal action against the platform, seeking an injunction to halt the use of user data for AI training, further emphasizing the breach of GDPR laws.
Following mounting legal pressure, X agreed on August 8 to temporarily suspend the use of European user data for AI training, a decision communicated to the Irish High Court. However, concerns remain about the fate of data collected before this policy change.
In addition to Austria, NOYB has filed complaints against X in Belgium and France, advocating for stricter compliance with data privacy regulations. This investigation follows similar actions against other tech giants, such as Meta, which was recently forced by the DPC to cease AI operations in Europe over comparable issues.
