WhatsApp to enable users to edit messages within 15 minutes
WhatsApp has announced a new feature that allows its users to edit their messages, bringing it in line with competitors such as Telegram and Discord. The company states that users will be able to make edits within 15 minutes of sending a message.
WhatsApp, which is a part of Meta, the US technology giant that also owns Facebook and Instagram, plans to roll out this feature to its 2 billion users in the upcoming weeks. Notably, India holds the largest user base for WhatsApp, with 487 million users.
In a blog post on Monday, the messaging service expressed its excitement about providing users with greater control over their chats. Whether it's fixing a simple typo or adding more context to a message, users can now accomplish this by long-pressing on a sent message and selecting the "Edit" option from the menu.
To ensure transparency, edited messages will be marked as "edited," indicating to recipients that the content has been modified. However, the specific changes made to the message will not be visible.
WhatsApp's decision to introduce this editing feature follows similar moves by its counterparts, Telegram and Signal. Facebook, the parent company, had implemented the edit function nearly a decade ago on its social media platform. At that time, Facebook observed that a significant portion of its users accessed the site through mobile phones, which are more prone to typing errors. On Facebook, edited updates are labeled accordingly, and users can access the edit history.
In the previous year, Twitter, the social media platform led by Elon Musk, granted its paying subscribers the ability to edit their tweets. Users can make edits within 30 minutes of posting, aiming to create a more approachable and less stressful tweeting experience. Twitter emphasized the importance of enabling users to participate in conversations effortlessly and in a manner that aligns with their preferences.
