Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu has disclosed that she suffered two pregnancy losses
The first miscarriage occurred in 2011, followed by another in 2018. Mirror Media in Taiwan initially reported the news, and Hsu, 46 years old, confirmed it through her lawyer, Lai Fangyu.
Hsu was previously married to Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei from 2010 to 2021, and they celebrated a grand wedding in the coastal city of Sanya, China, on March 22, 2011. Together, they have two children: a daughter, who is now nine years old, and a son who will turn seven on Sunday.
Following their divorce in November 2021, Hsu married South Korean musician DJ Koo last March.
According to the statement released by her lawyer, Hsu had to undergo a surgical procedure to terminate her pregnancy on March 18, 2011, as the fetus had ceased to develop. Consequently, she refrained from granting media interviews during the Sanya wedding. Ms. Lai stated that the loss of a child inflicted significant physical and emotional anguish upon Hsu, rendering her unable to fulfill such obligations.
The statement further revealed that Hsu experienced a second miscarriage in 2018. During an obstetrician-gynecologist visit on April 2 of that year, it was determined that the embryo she was carrying had stopped growing. Eighteen days later, she underwent an abortion.
Hsu's fragile physical and mental state was evident during the airing of the Chinese reality show "Xing Fu San Chong Zou" (Happiness Trio). Although she made efforts to cooperate with the program's filming on April 27, the statement described the pain in her heart as indescribable.
Ms. Lai expressed Hsu's distress over the timing of the report on her past miscarriages, which coincided with Mother's Day. The lawyer emphasized that women who have experienced similar traumas of miscarriage would inevitably feel the pain, as well as remorse and loss, resurfacing on Mother's Day.
Ms. Lai added, "I am concerned that the report will evoke traumatic reactions among these women. Therefore, I am encouraging them to support one another through comforting words."
The statement noted that Hsu had chosen not to discuss this matter previously, despite being subjected to cyberbullying. Ms. Lai remarked, "I had anticipated that the legal dissolution of the marriage would put an end to the matter. However, I did not expect that even today, this news would continue to cause disturbance, which is contrary to Ms. Hsu's desires."
Hsu, widely recognized for her role in the popular Taiwanese series "Meteor Garden" (2001), currently leads a serene and content life. Her legal affairs are managed by her law firms. The statement clarified that Hsu's team was not the source of Mirror Media's report.
"This statement aims to set the record straight and discourage the spread of rumors." Additionally, it extended well wishes to all mothers, particularly those who have endured the pain of loss, on Mother's Day.
