Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei and Poland's Jan Zielinski Win Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Title
Taiwanese tennis ace Hsieh Su-wei and Poland's Jan Zielinski clinched the Wimbledon mixed doubles title on Sunday, defeating the Mexican duo Santiago Gonzalez and Giuliana Olmos with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
This victory marks Hsieh's ninth Grand Slam title. She previously won the Australian Open mixed doubles title earlier this year with Zielinski. Hsieh has also secured seven Grand Slam women's doubles titles, including four at Wimbledon (2013, 2019, 2021, and 2023), two at the French Open (2014 and 2023), and one at the Australian Open (2024).
Despite her triumph in mixed doubles, Hsieh's impressive 22-match win streak in women's doubles at Wimbledon came to an end on Friday. She and her partner, Elise Mertens of Belgium, were defeated by the American-Czech pair of Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova in a match that ended 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The COVID-19 epidemic prevented Wimbledon from taking place in 2020, while Hsieh missed the 2022 tournament owing to an injury. Hsieh and Zielinski, seeded seventh in the mixed doubles, had a difficult journey to the championship match. They needed a 10-5 victory in a super tiebreaker to upset Townsend and Britain's Jamie Murray in the quarterfinals, and they had to win a set via a tiebreaker in each of their four encounters until the championship match.
