Spider-Man 2 & FF16 Didn’t Stop PlayStation From Hosting An Xbox Showcase
Sony's PlayStation Showcase in May 2023 left fans feeling underwhelmed, despite the inclusion of highly anticipated exclusives like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy 16. The announcement for the showcase mentioned a focus on games in development for the PS5 and PSVR 2 from top studios worldwide, while also acknowledging third-party partners and indie creators. However, fans had anticipated a greater emphasis on the exclusive titles that PlayStation is renowned for.
Regrettably, a Twitter poll conducted by Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest, following the showcase revealed that the overall quality of the presentation didn't meet viewers' expectations. At present, approximately 140,000 votes have been cast, resulting in an average grade of B or C for the PlayStation Showcase.
To compound the disappointment, Xbox tweeted an image indicating that 12 of the titles featured in PlayStation's presentation are multiplatform and will also be released on Xbox.
Fans Had Hoped for More PlayStation First-Party Exclusives
Leading up to the PlayStation Showcase, speculation ran rampant regarding the games that would be showcased. Fans were eagerly anticipating updates on previously announced PlayStation-exclusive titles like Death Stranding 2 or the standalone multiplayer game for The Last of Us. Additionally, there were rumors circulating about the potential confirmation of a sequel to the widely talked about Ghost of Tsushima, although these rumors were debunked in the days preceding the showcase.
Multiplatform Titles Are Suitable for State of Play, but Underwhelming for a PlayStation Showcase
The PlayStation showcase featured the presence of multiplatform titles such as Assassin's Creed Mirage and the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. While the former had already been established as a multiplatform title, set to launch on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, Snake Eater's remake had generated speculation about its exclusivity before the event. The reveal trailer for Snake Eater stated that the game would be available on PS5, without any mention of Xbox.
Expanding the accessibility of new titles to more players is always a positive development. However, some argue that a dedicated PlayStation Showcase event should primarily highlight the console's exclusive first-party titles, while multiplatform releases like these could have been better suited for a smaller State of Play event. Although there are still plenty of exciting titles on the horizon for PlayStation fans, it's understandable that their high expectations for a comprehensive PlayStation Showcase were not entirely met.
