Serbia received two new protected areas: Proclaimed protection of PIO "Stolovi" and PIO "Željin"
The area of exceptional features "Stolovi", located in the central part of Serbia on the territory of the city of Kraljevo, has been placed under protection in order to preserve hydrographic phenomena and two vegetation zones - oak and beech, with a number of introduced and modified ecosystems. The presence of strictly protected wild species such as the brown bear and the otter, as well as the chamois, which, after an unsuccessful settlement in the 60s of the last century, was resettled on this mountain in 2007 gives special importance to the Area of Exceptional Characteristics. The area of PIO "Stolovi" is 9,932.1 ha, of which 15.2% is included in the first degree, 31.0% in the second degree and 53.8% in the third degree of the total area of the protected area.

The area of exceptional characteristics "Željin" is located in the central part of Serbia, in the area of the city of Kraljevo and the municipalities of Aleksandrovac and Raška. It was placed under protection in order to preserve the hydrographic network, which is quite dense and consists of many springs, rivers and streams, as well as beech forests in the central mountain area and oak forests in the lower part of the mountain. PIO "Željin" also represents "Selected areas for diurnal butterflies in Serbia", and parts of this landscape are also potential areas of the "NATURA 2000" ecological network.
The area of the Area of Exceptional Characteristics "Željin" is 6,379.09 ha, of which 3.07% is included in the first degree, 3.15% in the second degree, and 93.78% in the third degree of the total area of the protected area. Read More…
