Saudi Arabia ExecutesTwo Bahrainis On Terrorism Charges
Saudi Arabia has reportedly executed two individuals from Bahrain who were accused of orchestrating terrorist activities. This brings the total number of similar executions to nine within the span of this month, as stated by state media on Monday.
The two Bahraini nationals, Jaafar Sultan and Sadiq Thamer, were charged with being part of a "terrorist cell led by a wanted individual in Bahrain," according to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Over the course of May 2 until now, Saudi Arabia, known for its frequent use of the death penalty, has executed nine individuals convicted of terrorism-related offenses. These executions predominantly took place in the eastern region, where the Shiite minority resides.
Based on reports from state media, the number of executions in Saudi Arabia this year has exceeded 40, according to AFP.
In 2022, Saudi Arabia faced international condemnation when it executed 147 individuals, 81 of whom were executed on a single day for offenses related to terrorism.
The two Bahrainis had allegedly received training in camps affiliated with terrorist organizations that aimed to destabilize the security of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, as mentioned by SPA. They were also accused of assisting "terrorists" in Saudi Arabia by smuggling explosive materials and supporting plans for terrorist attacks in both countries.
A report published earlier this year by Reprieve and the European-Saudi Organization for Human Rights revealed that over 1,000 death sentences have been carried out since King Salman assumed power in 2015.
Bahrain, too, has conducted executions in recent years for offenses related to terrorism. The Bahraini government accuses Iran of supporting and sheltering terrorists, a claim that Tehran denies.
