Russian Owlcat Games Has Control Over Pathfinder: Kingmaker Once Again
Owlcat Games, the developer behind popular CRPGs such as Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, has regained control over its debut title, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, after losing the rights several years ago. This development comes as a result of Owlcat reuniting with My.Games, both of which were previously subsidiaries of Mail.Ru. Owlcat became independent in 2019, and My.Games followed suit in 2022.
Pathfinder: Kingmaker was originally published by Owlcat under Mail.Ru's ownership, with My.Games retaining the rights to Mail.Ru's gaming properties after the companies split. Now that both Owlcat and My.Games are independent entities, Knight's Peak, the newly launched premium publishing arm of My.Games, has facilitated the return of Pathfinder: Kingmaker to Owlcat's control.
Knight's Peak described the reunion as a "homecoming," emphasizing the significance of bringing Pathfinder: Kingmaker back to the developers who originally created it. While no specific promises have been made by either Owlcat or Knight's Peak, this renewed partnership opens the door for potential updates or patches to Kingmaker, something fans have been eagerly anticipating since Owlcat lost control over the game.
Since gaining independence, Owlcat Games has continued to thrive, releasing Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous in 2021, which received strong reviews, including an 83 Metascore on Metacritic. The reunion with Pathfinder: Kingmaker marks an exciting chapter for Owlcat as they regain the ability to potentially refine and enhance their first major title.
