Researchers record new species of fish in Paraguay
This occurs within the framework of the project called "Aquatic communities associated with native forests and eucalyptus forest plantations ( Eucalyptus spp )", which received G. 392,118,038 from the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) through the program Prociencia with support from the FEEI.
According to the report presented, fish are aquatic vertebrates that live in both fresh and salt water. There is a huge diversity of fish representing a variety of colors, sizes and shapes.
Species of the characiformes group were identified, which are fish with scales (bogas, tarariras and mojarras), and siluriformes, which are catfish and which in turn were divided into species with leather and with plates.
Also the types of electric fish (gymnotiformes) that inhabit the waters of the Tapytá Reserve. The authors of the material are researchers Héctor Vera Alcaraz and Braulio Rojas.
Tapyta Nature Reserve
The fish guide of the Tapytá Natural Reserve, Caazapá Department, Paraguay , is the first fish inventory carried out in the protected area, registering a total of 55 fish species, of which three are new records for the country.
The researchers highlighted that previously 308 species of fish were registered in the national territory and with the contribution of the project there are currently 311.
While the Tapytá Reserve Amphibians guide recorded 28 species, of which 16 were reported for the first time for the protected area, completing the material inventory with 32 amphibian species, organized in the order in which they belong, the family, the scientific name, the name in Guaraní, Spanish and English, among other relevant aspects.
The material includes a brief review of the reserve, general information about amphibians, previous studies on this group of animals, analysis of the richness and conservation status of amphibians in the protected area. Read More…
