Rally de Portugal begins today
The 56th edition of the Rally de Portugal, the fifth round of the world championship, kicks off today with the first eight of the 19 qualifying specials planned for the three days of the race.
Around 90 teams will participate in a rally driving competition that will take place on roads designed in the heart of the country. The event will begin in Coimbra, and the competitors will encounter double passages through the stages of Lousã (12.03 km), Góis (19.33 km), and Arganil (18.72 km). Subsequently, they will pass through Mortágua (18.15 km) before the introduction of the super special stage in Figueira da Foz, which will replace the one that usually takes place in Coimbra. All in all, the first day of the competition will cover a distance of 120.59 kilometres.
On Saturday and Sunday, the rally drivers will head towards the north, and they will encounter the sections of Vieira do Minho (26.61 km), Amarante (37.24 km), and Felgueiras (8.91 km). The second day of the competition will conclude with the popular super special stage in Lousada, which will take place on the Costilha track.
On Sunday, the competitors will debut the Paredes section, which will be followed by the first passage through the Fafe special stage (11.18 km) and the Cabeceiras de Basto stage (22.23 km). The last special stage, the Power Stage, will take place again in Fafe, and the five fastest rally drivers will be awarded 15 extra points. As is customary, the competitors will finish the competition on the picturesque coastal road of Matosinhos, a few kilometres from the rally's operational centre at Exponor.
