Portugal proposes former Finance Minister Maria Luís Albuquerque as candidate for European Commissioner
The Portuguese Government has officially nominated Maria Luís Albuquerque, the former Minister of Finance, as the country's candidate for the role of European Commissioner. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro at his official residence in São Bento.
In his brief statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that the decision to propose Albuquerque was made with the unanimous support of the government, highlighting the "complete discretion" with which the selection process was conducted.
He praised Albuquerque's qualifications, noting her experience and capabilities, particularly during her tenure as Minister of State and Finance under the leadership of Pedro Passos Coelho. Montenegro expressed confidence that Albuquerque would represent Portugal with distinction in the European Commission.
Maria Luís Albuquerque, 56, is recognized for her role as Minister of State and Finance during a critical period when Portugal was under financial assistance from the ‘troika’. She took over from Vítor Gaspar in July 2013 and served until the end of Passos Coelho's government.
She has also held significant positions within the Social Democratic Party (PSD), including vice president during Passos Coelho's leadership and leading the PSD candidate list for deputies in Setúbal in 2011 and 2015. Albuquerque is currently a member of the PSD National Council.
