Parliament To Seek Public Opinion On Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Impeachment
Kenya's Parliament will seek public opinion on the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua before its formal consideration in the House next week.
The motion, introduced by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, accuses Gachagua of over 10 violations, including breaches of the Constitution, corruption, incitement, and undermining national unity.
Speaker Moses Wetangula has announced that public participation will be facilitated across all 47 counties, starting this Friday, as mandated by court decisions that emphasize public involvement in such high-profile cases.
Gachagua will have the opportunity to defend himself, either personally or through legal representation.
The motion will be debated next Tuesday, and if approved, it could lead to Gachagua's removal from office. Mutuse claims to have gathered support from 291 MPs, well above the 117 signatures required to meet the constitutional threshold. The charges against Gachagua include promoting ethnic discrimination, undermining national unity, and failing to fulfill his responsibilities as Deputy President.
