Nigerian Online Population Shows High Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools
A recent global survey report from Ipsos and Google has revealed a significant level of engagement with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools among Nigeria's online population. The study, titled “Our Life with AI: From Innovation to Application,” surveyed 21,000 individuals across 21 countries and found that global AI usage has surged to 48%. Notably, excitement about AI's potential now outweighs concerns, with a sentiment of 57% in favor of AI compared to 43% expressing apprehension—an increase from a balanced 50/50 split last year.
In Nigeria, the adoption and enthusiasm for AI tools are even more pronounced. The report indicates that 70% of the Nigerian online population has utilized generative AI, significantly surpassing the global average of 48%. Furthermore, an impressive 87% of respondents expressed excitement about AI's potential, believing that its benefits outweigh the associated risks.
Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Google & Alphabet, commented on the findings, stating, “AI is starting to deliver magic at scale, making people’s lives easier and better. The survey results show the more people use these tools, the more excited they get about the possibilities and about the personal, professional, and scientific breakthroughs on the way.”
The survey results highlight a growing optimism about AI within Nigeria's online community:
- Generative AI Usage: 70% of Nigerian respondents reported using generative AI in the past year.
- Perceived Benefits: 87% believe that the potential benefits of AI outweigh its risks.
- Economic Impact: 81% of surveyed Nigerian adults anticipate that AI will positively change the economy.
- Impact on Science and Medicine: A remarkable 90% expect AI to have a positive impact on science and medicine, indicating a strong belief in AI's potential to drive advancements in these critical sectors.
The report notes that Nigeria's online population exhibits a higher level of excitement and adoption of AI compared to other regions, particularly in contrast to more cautious sentiments observed in some European and North American countries. This enthusiasm reflects a broader recognition of AI's potential to enhance personal and professional development.
The survey also suggests that the Nigerian online community is keen to embrace innovation rather than impose restrictive regulations on AI advancement. Respondents believe that AI can improve lives by boosting productivity and providing access to valuable resources.
The findings from this survey underscore the strong enthusiasm and optimism of Nigeria's online population regarding the transformative role of AI in various aspects of life, particularly in the economy, healthcare, and scientific advancement. As one of the most enthusiastic countries globally about AI's potential, Nigeria is poised to leverage these technologies for significant progress.
