Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera secures his party's support for second term bid
Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera has secured the backing of his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for a second term in the 2025 election. However, his chances of winning might hinge on forming a strong alliance, especially after the United Transformation Movement (UTM) withdrew from their coalition following the death of its leader, former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, in June.
Chilima's UTM had played a crucial role in Chakwera's 2020 victory by helping him secure the necessary absolute majority. Without a similar alliance, Chakwera's path to reelection could be more challenging, as Malawi's electoral system requires a presidential candidate to obtain more than 50% of the votes to win.
At the MCP convention, Chakwera expressed confidence in his party's growing support, emphasizing that the MCP is attracting more members and that it remains a strong contender for the upcoming election. Despite this optimism, opposition parties criticize the MCP for failing to deliver on its promises, particularly in improving the economy and tackling corruption.
