Lagos Government Reads Riot Act to Unregistered Private Schools
The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to all unapproved and unregistered private schools in the state, mandating them to register immediately with the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) or face sanctions. This directive was communicated in a statement by Mr. Remi Abdul, the Coordinating Director of the OEQA, on Monday.
The announcement follows a directive from the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, emphasizing the government's commitment to ensuring that all educational institutions below the tertiary level meet the required standards and provide quality education to learners. The statement highlighted that registration is mandatory for all private schools, and failure to comply will result in consequences.
The OEQA has set a deadline for unregistered schools to submit their applications by January 13, 2025, to avoid penalties. Registered schools will benefit from the state government's recognition and interventions, as well as access to technical and financial support. Additionally, these schools will be kept informed about emerging policies and initiatives from both the Lagos State and Federal Government.
The statement noted that the rapid growth in the number of private schools in Lagos necessitates proper registration and documentation to facilitate effective monitoring. The Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring that all learners receive quality education, and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through the OEQA, will take decisive action against any institution that fails to register.
