IBM opens first European Quantum Data Centre in Germany
Tech giant IBM has officially launched its first European Quantum Data Centre in Ehningen, Germany, marking the company's second quantum data centre globally and its first outside the United States. The centre features IBM Quantum Eagle-based systems, with plans to introduce the IBM Quantum Heron-based system soon.
These quantum systems are designed to perform advanced computations beyond the capabilities of classical computers.
IBM describes its IBM Heron chip, first unveiled last year, as the company's most powerful quantum chip yet. It allows users to execute more complex algorithms on actual quantum hardware.
The IBM Heron system will be the third of its kind installed in IBM’s global network, supporting over 250 institutions, including enterprises, universities, and research organizations. IBM claims that this new system will provide up to 16 times more performance and 25 times more speed than quantum computers from just two years ago.
The new data centre, accessible via the IBM Quantum Platform, will be instrumental in fostering quantum innovation across Europe. IBM's Ana Paula Assis, general manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, emphasized that the centre will bolster collaboration across industries, academia, and policymakers, helping Europe stay at the forefront of quantum advancements.
This facility is seen as crucial for attracting new talent and driving technological innovation within the European quantum ecosystem.
