High Speed Internet at home: Portugal is in the top 5 in Europe

This study was carried out by the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) — the regulatory body for postal and electronic communications in Portugal — and compares statistical data with the same period last year.

For reference, the definition of ultra-fast internet is associated with FTTH (fiber-to-the-home), that is, from the point of departure to the fiber receiver inside the home, while FTTB (fiber-to-the-home) building) can be considered high-speed internet (reaching the building by fiber optic, however, by ethernet cable inside the house).

According to data from the FTTH Council Europe (corroborated by ANACOM), in September 2021, Portugal had fiber optic coverage (FTTH/B) of 86.8%, placing us in 5th place in the EU39 (Europe of 39 countries). ). Ahead were countries like Latvia (1st), Spain (2nd), Israel (3rd) and Norway (4th). Still in this data, Portugal is the 7th country with the least work to do to complete the implementation in all households (only about 536 thousand houses remain in 5,859 million houses).

According to ANACOM, “in the 1st quarter of 2022, the number of residential customers of high-speed services at a fixed location reached 3.4 million, 7.6% more than in the same period of the previous year (9, 4% in the 1st quarter of 2021). It should be noted that around nine out of ten new high-speed network customers contracted a service supported by fiber optic networks (FTTH) […]”.

At a fixed location, around 80.7% of families residing on national soil used high-speed connections , however, national asymmetries are felt in terms of the distribution of these connections. Lisbon leads the penetration of national fiber with 94.7% , the North with 77.1%, surpassed by the Azores, Madeira and Algarve and the last in the table is the Alentejo with a penetration of 62.9% .

“It is estimated that, at least, about 5.9 million households were cabled with a high-speed network […]. The coverage of high-speed networks was 92.5%, 2.8 percentage points (pp) more than in the same period of 2021″ says the Portuguese regulatory body. This reflects some of the effort that has been made in Portugal by telecommunications companies and the commitments they make to customers in the modernization of infrastructure and competitiveness. Read More…
