Greek professors predict strongest earthquake in Greece
Two Greek scientists assessed Greece's seismic history and said it will soon face a magnitude 8.5 earthquake on the Richter scale.
Professors Costas Synolakis and Costas Papazakos studied the circumstances of a series of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. On local MEGA TV channel, Synolakis said Greece could also face strong seismic activity.
He pointed out that strong earthquakes in Greece occur once every 600 years.
"The last major earthquake in Crete occurred in 1403 and I estimate that such earthquakes occur every 600-800 years. We are already at the threshold of an earthquake of the order of 8.5 points on the Richter scale," Synolakis said.
The words of the scientist were confirmed by his colleague Costas Papazakos, seismology professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He also stressed the periodicity of earthquakes in Greece but it is impossible to predict the exact time of the next disaster. Read More…
