Fluminense secures a 2-0 victory over São Paulo
Fluminense secured a crucial 2-0 victory over São Paulo in the 25th round of the Brazilian Championship, in front of more than 45,000 fans at Maracanã. The win keeps Fluminense out of the relegation zone, as they now sit in 16th place with 27 points. Kauã Elias and Keno scored the goals that sealed the victory, while São Paulo dropped to sixth place with 41 points.
The match was tightly contested, with both teams struggling to create clear scoring opportunities in the first half. Fluminense's Marcelo attempted a shot from outside the area, but it lacked accuracy. São Paulo's William Gomes responded with a dangerous advance down the right, but his effort was also off-target.
Fluminense began to create more significant chances as the game progressed. Ganso intercepted a ball and set up Kauã Elias, who passed to Arias. The Colombian’s shot, however, went wide. Thiago Santos also had a headed effort saved by São Paulo's goalkeeper Rafael.
São Paulo made three substitutions at halftime and started the second half stronger. Ferraresi headed a ball from a free kick towards Luiz Gustavo, who narrowly missed the target. William Gomes also forced a good save from Fluminense’s goalkeeper Fábio.
Despite São Paulo's pressure, Fluminense managed to withstand the onslaught and eventually broke through. Keno, who came on as a substitute, took a shot from outside the area that deflected off Erick. Rafael made an impressive save, but later in the match, Keno scored Fluminense’s second goal after a great play by Guga. Rafael failed to stop the shot, sealing São Paulo's fate.
In the dying moments, Thiago Silva's defensive efforts helped Fluminense maintain their lead, as he made crucial interventions to deny São Paulo any hope of a comeback.
Fluminense will next face Juventude on Sunday, while São Paulo has upcoming matches against Cruzeiro in the league and Atlético-MG in the Copa do Brasil.
