Cyclone Biparjoy: Karachi DHA Advises Residents to Safely Leave their Homes
As the sea level rises along the shoreline, Karachi is preparing for the arrival of cyclone Biparjoy. The Defence Housing Authority (DHA) has advised its residents to evacuate their homes and move to safer locations. Although the cyclone has weakened and is now classified as a very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS), it has moved closer to Karachi and currently sits approximately 470km south of the city.
The meteorological department has predicted that Karachi, Hyderabad, and other cities in Sindh will experience dust storms, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds of 60-80 Kmph from the 14th to the 16th of June, due to the influence of this cyclonic system. Additionally, Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman has warned that urban flooding may occur in Karachi due to the scale and intensity of the winds.
Minister Rehman took to Twitter to raise awareness about the cyclone, emphasizing the importance of taking the advisories from the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the Balochistan PDMA seriously. She urged the public not to underestimate the cyclone, as its intensity is unpredictable, and even though it has weakened in some areas, caution should still be exercised, especially along the Sindh coast.
Given the gravity of the situation, provincial authorities have declared a state of emergency in various departments, including health, civic agencies, and rescue services, to effectively respond to the cyclone. The DHA, recognizing the safety and well-being of its residents as their utmost priority, has issued an evacuation notice through its social media channels. They strongly recommend that DHA residents voluntarily leave their homes from June 13th, 2023, until the situation stabilizes. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of everyone until the cyclone subsides.
