China calls for immediate cessation of Israeli encroachment on Palestinian territory
China has taken a strong position, urging Israel to promptly halt its encroachment on the land and assets of the Palestinian population. Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, raised this pressing issue during a session of the UN Security Council dedicated to the Middle East.
The Chinese representative expressed profound concern regarding Israel's continual unilateral actions, which include approving settlements, constructing new ones, and legalizing existing ones. Emphasizing the violation of international law and UN Security Council Resolution 2334, Geng underscored the importance of respecting and upholding the historical status quo of religious holy sites in Jerusalem.
He reiterated the significance of safeguarding the rights of the Palestinian people and urged Israel to immediately cease such actions. Geng also drew attention to recent tensions in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly mentioning a senior Israeli security official who entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, leading to renewed unrest. This incident marked the second occurrence this year and received widespread condemnation from various countries, including the United States, Turkey, France, Jordan, Qatar, Malaysia, and Egypt.
In addressing the matter of religious holy sites, Geng emphasized that Israel must refrain from provocation, ensure the right to worship for Muslim worshippers, maintain peace and tranquility at these sacred locations, and respect Jordan's custodianship.
The Chinese diplomat highlighted the recurring nature of tensions between Palestine and Israel in recent years, underscoring the insufficiency of a long-stalled peace process and the temporary nature of crisis management measures.
Geng stressed the necessity of a comprehensive and equitable solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict, emphasizing its indispensability. He called upon influential nations to take tangible actions to advance the Middle East peace process and avoid impeding the Security Council's ability to reach a minimum consensus on the Palestine-Israel issue without valid justification. China reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their just cause to regain their legitimate national rights.
Additionally, it expressed support for the establishment of a fully sovereign and independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. China's firm position on this urgent matter reflects the mounting global concern over Israel's encroachment on Palestinian land, underscoring the immediate need for a fair and lasting resolution to ensure peace and stability in the region.
