Attendance and Historical Turnouts of Glastonbury Festival
Glastonbury Festival, held annually at Worthy Farm in Somerset, has a capacity so large that it temporarily transforms the area into the seventh-largest city in the UK during the festival weekend in June. This year, the festival will feature performances by stars like Dua Lipa, Coldplay, SZA, and Shania Twain.
Attendance in 2024:
For the 2024 festival, the official capacity is set at 210,000 people. This figure includes everyone on-site: performers, stage crew, celebrities, fans, hospitality staff, medical personnel, and various other workers. The festival's ticket sales are a notable event, with 138,000 tickets available to the general public, usually selling out within an hour. Additionally, 5,000 tickets are reserved for local residents for Sunday, giving Somerset natives a chance to join the festivities. The remaining 67,000 spots are allocated to staff and performers, ensuring the smooth running of the event.
Historical Turnouts:
Highest Legitimate Ticket Sales: The highest number of legitimate tickets sold was in 2005, with 153,000 tickets. That year featured headliners The White Stripes and Coldplay, with Kylie Minogue also scheduled to perform before she had to withdraw due to her breast cancer diagnosis.
Rumored Highest Attendance: In 1994, the rumored largest attendance was during The Levellers’ Pyramid Stage set, with claims of over 300,000 people present. However, the official count according to Glastonbury's website was a more manageable 80,000. This discrepancy is attributed to a large number of fence-jumpers.
Gatecrashing Incidents: Significant gatecrashing also occurred in 1999 and 2000, with an estimated additional 100,000 people entering the site without tickets, bringing the total attendance to around 250,000. These safety concerns led to the local District Council refusing further licenses until 2002.
