Amazon’s Economic Impact in Spain
Since entering Spain's market in 2010, Amazon has made significant economic contributions, investing over €17.5 billion in operations across the country. In 2023 alone, Amazon invested €3.4 billion, enhancing infrastructure, operational capabilities, and expanding its workforce to over 25,000 employees by the end of the year—two years ahead of schedule for its 2025 job creation commitment.
Amazon's network in Spain spans approximately 40 facilities, including new fulfilment centers in Zaragoza and Girona, with plans for additional sites in Siero, Granada, and A Coruña by the end of 2024. These expansions aim to stimulate economic growth in various regions, supporting both large and small communities.
The company's impact extends beyond job creation to supporting Spanish SMEs, with over 15,000 SMEs currently selling through Amazon. In 2022, these businesses generated €950 million in exports, marking a 10% year-over-year growth. Amazon invests in digital skills training and tools for SMEs, aiming to train 50,000 businesses by 2025 through initiatives like the Despega program.
Culturally, Amazon has bolstered Spain's creative industries through platforms like Prime Video, Amazon Music, Audible, Kindle, and Twitch. Initiatives like the weekly live entertainment show "Operación Triunfo" on Prime Video and successful original productions highlight Amazon's support for local talent and cultural diversity.
In terms of taxation, Amazon's total tax contribution in Spain in 2023 amounted to €1.1 billion, encompassing corporate income tax, payroll taxes, national insurance contributions, digital services tax, and VAT collected on behalf of third-party sellers.
Amazon remains committed to Spain's economic and cultural landscape, continuing to innovate, invest, and support communities nationwide.
