Peter Booker’s next talk will take place on Tuesday 28th at 6pm at Lagoa Municipal Library
Earthquakes happen in the Algarve almost every day, and most of them are fortunately minor and unfelt by most people. The last major shock causing fatalities came on 28 February 1969, but even this year on 17 March there was a minor earthquake whose epicentre was near Albufeira.
As the Algarve is in an earthquake zone, Peter Booker will present a talk on The Great Earthquake of 1755 in the Algarve. He will also analyse the other seismic events in this area over time, and discuss the probable location of the epicentres. Many studies have concentrated on the effects of the Earthquake in Lisbon, but there are few studies on how the Algarve was affected by this major disaster. Our concert at 17h00 on Sunday 2nd April will feature our three well-known Dutch pianists. Irene Ainstein teaches at the Conservatório Regional Maria Campina in Faro, and Inge Lulofs and Marlies van Gent take time off their heavy schedules in the Netherlands to travel and perform for us here in the Algarve. Their programme includes, for four hands, Rachmaninov opus 11 and Slavonic Dances by Dvorak opus 46 and 72; and for six hands, works by Schubert, Mozart, Donizetti and Bizet in arrangements by different composers.
As usual, at the end of our Easter Concert, our performers will indulge in a little light-hearted musical banter at the keyboard. It is a bit of a squeeze to fit three adult players at one keyboard, and the result is always fun. Read More…
