Agronomy School in Venezuela Increases Youth Skills, Provides Needed Food

The Salesian Agronomic Technical School in Barinas, Venezuela, is making a significant impact by providing agricultural and livestock education to nearly 100 students aged 15 to 17. This institution not only focuses on academic learning but also ensures that students have access to nutrition, health care, and a variety of recreational and extracurricular activities. The school fosters a welcoming environment that resembles a family atmosphere, where students receive support from adults and can build connections with their peers.

This year, the school has successfully reactivated the production of milk and other agricultural products, thanks to the support of the Salesian Mission Office based in Madrid. Rafael Garrido, who oversees the organization’s Latin America projects, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This project guarantees the sustainability of the Barinas school, reactivates the productive sector, and at the same time strengthens the technical capacities of young people in vulnerable situations in rural areas. This also allows students, teachers, staff, and the community to have healthy and nutritious food.”

In the current context of Venezuela, where basic products are scarce and over 50% of the population lives in poverty, the project is crucial. Funding is being directed toward improving infrastructure, purchasing seeds and livestock, and enhancing educational activities.

Éibar, a graduate of the school who now teaches and manages his own farm, reflected on his experience, saying, “All students shared experiences and culture, regardless of race or economic status. When we left school, we were technically prepared to work the land better.”

The challenges facing Venezuelan youth are significant, with 34% not attending school due to poverty. The country is also grappling with a severe educational crisis, characterized by many teachers being out of work and schools operating only two to three days a week. The Salesians have been a presence in Barinas for over 80 years, providing quality education to thousands of young people.

A Salesian representative highlighted the importance of education, stating, “Education is fundamental. At the Salesian Agronomic Technical School, students are in an atmosphere of trust and great respect. Teachers are also supported; they receive their salary as well as food and transportation.” This holistic approach not only equips students with essential skills but also addresses their basic needs, contributing to a brighter future for the youth of Venezuela.
