Afrobasket 2024: Mali's Golden Girls Win U18 FIBA Championship
The 2024 FIBA U18 Women's AfroBasket has concluded, with Mali emerging as champions after defeating Nigeria 76-56 in the final match on Saturday in Pretoria, South Africa. This historic victory marks Mali's record-extending seventh U18 Women's AfroBasket title since 2006.
The Malian team completed the tournament with an impressive 6-0 record, showcasing their dominance throughout the competition. Their unbeaten run earned them one of the two available African tickets to the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2025, which will take place in Czechia.
Nigeria's journey to the final was impressive, with victories over Egypt (66-51) and Uganda (71-67) in the semifinals. Although they couldn't match Mali's intensity in the final, their strong performance earned them the second ticket to the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2025.
Cameroon claimed third place after a hard-fought 70-63 victory over Uganda. Despite losing to Mali in the semifinals, Cameroon bounced back to secure their first podium finish in the competition. Uganda finished fourth after losing to Nigeria in their semifinal clash.
