Africell deploys mobile money platform in Angola
Africell has introduced its mobile financial platform, Afrimoney, in Angola, with the aim of expanding its operations in a country where mobile finance usage is relatively low. In an effort to promote the platform, Africell will provide new Afrimoney customers with complimentary person-to-person transactions and a 100% bonus on all mobile recharges made through the mobile money service.
Angola's mobile money adoption remains limited, as indicated by a GSMA report, which presents a favorable opportunity for growth as stated by Africell. The company obtained its mobile money license in Angola in January 2022. Having commenced its commercial mobile network services in Angola in April 2022, Africell has already amassed a customer base of 7 million users. The company has received support from the Development Finance Corporation, an arm of the United States government. Africell operates in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, and Gambia, serving over 16 million subscribers across sub-Saharan Africa.
Ziad Dalloul, the CEO, president, and founder of Africell Group, emphasized the company's mission to revolutionize the telecommunications sector in Angola. He described the launch of Afrimoney as a pivotal step in this strategy, highlighting that their network is designed to enhance connectivity, improve efficiency, and provide access to a wide array of digital services. Africell believes that mobile money has the potential to integrate various aspects of life and anticipates a substantial impact on both their business and the Angolan economy.
