A Lesbian love triangle – uncomfortable and relentless
In her novel "Baby Jane", Sofi Oksanen tells the story of a relationship between three women from the jubilant beginning to the tragic end.
When the first-person narrator meets the charismatic and attractive Piki, she falls head over heels in love. But only after some time does she realize that Piki has secrets from her: due to an anxiety disorder, she is severely restricted in everyday life and is unable to carry out the simplest activities. So she depends on her ex-girlfriend Bossa to do things like grocery shopping and laundry for her.
But the narrator does not want to accept these intimacies. Jealousy and distrust are compounded by their own psychological and financial struggles - and it doesn't take long for the simmering conflict between them to erupt violently.
Oksanen's second novel, Baby Jane, is a sharply observed portrait of a toxic relationship, adapted from Robert Aldrich's film What Really Happened to Baby Jane?. Uncomfortably and ruthlessly, the author shows how quickly and brutally mental illnesses can catapult those who suffer from them to the fringes of society."Baby Jane" is now available as a 224-page hardback for 22 euros and as an e-book for 18.99 euros (Amazon affiliate link ) appeared.
