21 flattering dresses to add to your summer rotation
Flattering dresses aren't the easiest to find, especially without trying them on first. Everyone's body shape and size is different, naturally, so what looks great on one person might not look the same on someone else. And that's totally OK. The best thing about shopping is getting to know what works for you and what you feel your most confident in.
As a general rule of thumb, any dress that nips in at the smallest part of your figure (i.e. your waist) and doesn't cling to your stomach is going to be complementary. Designers like Alaïa, Zimmermann, Versace and Michael Kors are renowned for creating silhouettes that celebrate the female form through exaggerated tailoring and strategic accents, and, of course, the high street has followed their lead.
There are other solutions (read: floaty dresses) that you can reach for when you want something totally non-restrictive, and the best shapewear is a godsend for creating a smooth appearance beneath bodycon dresses (though it's not an everyday item and nor should it be). Flattering dresses are that ideal in-between, however, and accentuate all the right places while still leaving you with lots of room.
While we could preach that cut-out dresses and form-fitting minis are what you should be buying RN (they are in, after all), we're not going to, because - for the most part - a pretty midi with a waist is a far better wardrobe addition. So which ones are we drawn to?
Roksanda's Ioesphina pleated cotton-poplin dress is a firm favourite not only for its cobalt blue hue and lightweight fabric, which we love for summer, but for its pulled-in waist and clever, voluminous sleeves. Frocks with smocking details nearly always fall under the flattering dress category, plus they tap into the cottagecore trend that everyone's sporting at the moment. We've added this picnic-ready one from ASOS DESIGN Curve, and this black milkmaid style from Marks & Spencer to cart already.
The best flattering dresses
Wrap dresses: A shape Kate Middleton turns to on the reg, wrap dresses are flattering most (if not all) body shapes. They fit and flatter your bust while skimming over your middle.
Trapeze and A-Line dresses: Small/fitted at the top and wider at the hem, these style dresses are great for easy breezy dressing. They are a throw-on-and-go favourite and complement those with wider hips.
Ruched dresses: Gathered detailing and soft drapery creates a really flattering look and give the illusion of a narrower waistline (if that's something you want!).
Panelled dresses: Similarly, panelling will provide that ‘nipped-in’ appearance, lending an hourglass effect.
Dresses made from form-fitting fabrics: Ditch the solutionwear altogether and go straight for the dresses that do it for you with materials like jacquard and spandex. SKIMS' Fits Everybody range is popular for a reason.
